"SO VERY, VERY Disappointed!" 2010-02-20

I have been looking forward to getting this device for, I think, 2 years, ever since I heard it was in development, and it took much, much longer than expected to arrive in the U.S. The first one I ordered from amazon had no wall charger. The replacement also had no wall charger, and was missing the sticker with the serial number needed to register it. I obtained another one (not from amazon), and could not register it as the web portal refused to recognize my phone number (even with the "1" country code, as requested - I tried with and without the "1", no go either way). I cannot ever get hold of customer support via telephone, and they answer emails either several months late or never, so I guess I'll just have to return the third device, too. It is not enough to invent a better mousetrap, you actually have to make sure that it works for all of your consumers, and to be available to fix any glitches like missing components or a flawed web registration system.

I bought this product for my 5 year old daughter, because I liked the idea that this watch actually finds my child, not just some device in a back pack or jacket, while my girl could be someplace entirely different. Once you put on the watch to your child's wrist, you always know where they are. The watch cannot be removed, except with a little pin - and should somebody else take it off, an alert is sent to my cell and my e-mail. I was also pleasantly surprised by the accuracy of the location requests. It works outdoors within a few feet, and even indoors I get good results. I like the SMS feature - just text 'wru' and a location is sent to my cell - really easy to use. My daughter thinks it looks cool and shows it off to her peers. Gives me the peace of mind I wanted. Great product, I can really recommend it.

"Over Rated, Over Priced, Over Sold, Under Performs" 2009-09-21

Unlike every other Suunto product I have owned, this one is a PIG! Its a poor watch. It's a poor GPS. It's an OK barometer. It's a poor compass. However, it IS all these things in a single device! I believe they simply tried to put too much into a single package, and thus sub-optimzed everything. Of the many features the device offers, the GPS is the least reliable and worst performing. Too bad, since that is the feature most desired by the purchaser. The issues are as follows:

Very slow to get a lock on GPS. As much as 45 minutes when first turned on in a new reagion.

Very slow to re-acquire GPS position, even after having had a solid lock within the previous hour. 15 to 20 minutes in open terrain and on open water with unobstructed horizon.

Frequent tracking 'drop out'

When it loses signal and drops the tracking, it stayes 'dropped'. It doesn't then re-acquire the signal

Battery performance is OK, so long as you don't use the GPS. It's dead in four hours when engage in constant GPS tracking...which by the way, it won't accomplish becasue it keeps dropping the signal.

Suunto reports that the small antenna configuration makes this so...I guess they didn't tell the folks at Garmin, because they seem to make small antennas work just fine.

Now, let's talk about case failures, rubber gasket failures, and button failures. All within the first 12 months. The front case top de-laminated...twice. The third case is still intact, mostly because I don't use the watch because it just doesn't perform. The rubber gasket that covers the actuating buttons failed due to fatigue, since you use the buttons a lot to keep the instrument tracking. And on and on it goes.

This product has probably created more bad will for Suunto than its worth. It really should be withdrawn. Save your money, or buy a nice Garmin AND a watch/barometer/compass combination. you will be ahead of the game and for a lot less money.

Uniqueness of this watch was the GPS feature. However, I have yet to acquire a sufficient satellite signals to use any of the functions of this watch that require GPS feature. I paid a lot of money for these features and am now only using it as a time piece. Even as an ordinary watch, I have to recharge every couple of weeks to use it. I have written to Suunto and asked to trade it in for X10 but they refused. My argument to them was that if the watch does not work as advertised, they should not market them as such. Some of us rely on these technologies with our lives..literally. Their response was that their upgraded model X10 should work better in acquiring the signals. No reasonable remedy. Maybe they produce other products that are good but based on their company policies, I will never purchase another Suunto product again but will be a living negative advertisement of their products. I would give "negative" stars if I could. Way to go Suunto...

I have owned this watch for two years. I have read the manual and tried the PC software. Neither are clear. I own several GPS receivers and watches. I regret trying to get this watch to do both. The battery goes dead very quickly and was replaced at the factory at my expense. The water resistance is now gone so it is in the shop again. It failed me in a mild rain.

The GPS is always slow to aquire a signal strong enough to mark a point or navigate by. All the time it spends trying figure out it's location it is also running down the battery fast. The buttons have a poor tactical feel to them that requires looking at the watch carefully or enabling the slilly beeps.

I wish I could get my time and money back.

Received this watch last week. Thought it would be nice to have all this functionality in a watch.

I have over 14 years experience with GPS systems. This one is perhaps the least stable I have ever used including the older sequencing receivers. Since it will not hold lock even in an open flat area unless held level and away from your body, you can't very well move about with it strapped to your wrist and get any usable data. In a car - forget it. I let it acquire and load the satellite emepheris data for 15 minutes, after which it still could not hold position fixes with any normal movement, even it open terrain with good satellite geometry.

The other functions work well enough, stopwatch, dual time, compass, barometer, etc. The temp function is worthless, however this cannot be accomplished with any watch since your wrist warms it.

In conclusion it is not as good as the Casio triple sensor pathfinder you can get for about 160 dollars, which has a compass, baro temp function and a battery that lasts years rather than days like this one does (between recharges).

I'm in the military and purchased this watch mainly for Land Navigation. When switched to MGRS this watch performed above my expectations. While in the desert the watch performed outstanding and outfited my squad with a ten digit grid. I love this watch mainly for military use the only downfall to me is the battery life.

"Falls a bit short - poor display and flimsy" 2010-02-10

I had a Suunto X-lander before this watch. I remember it being flawless, easy to read, and solid construction. This watch looked to be a good replacement, but I was immediately disappointed. The display is very difficult to read, I have to stare intently to see the North indicator on the compass and read the display in general. The backlight doesn't help as it is also very weak.

Then, there's the construction. It has a polished case and all I can think is SCRATCH! The watchband felt like it would rip.

As far as functions go, seems well featured, but the display really makes this watch unappealing to me.

I read all the reviews before buying this watch and I should have listened. This watch is not worth the $300 you will pay for it. Suunto wil not honor your warranty if you buy this watch on Amazon.

The black background with numbers does not work. It looks neat, sounds stylish, but is not functional.

The compass is off by 20 degrees. This is the main reason I bought the watch. Don't waste your money.

If you intend to use the stopwatch while you exercise, the stopwatch is too small to read while you are running.

The Alarm works great. The watch is large, but very comfortable. The altimeter is neat, but not terribly useful. The thermometer obviously won't work becuase its pressed against your skin. The clock works great, but on the $60 watch I should have bought, you can see the numbers on the stopwatch.

Save your money, do not buy this watch.

"Comparison w/ a Casio pathfinder" 2010-01-10

I normally don't wear digital watches, mostly automatics or mechanicals, but it's useful to have a few extra features, like dual time zones, especially when travelling.

Compared to the Casio Pathfinder--I have a Casio Men's Solar Atomic Pathfinder Multi-Band Watch #PAW1300G-1V--the Suunto is:

1. Better looking, but that's a taste thing. The Pathfinder is a more pedestrian, but some people think the Suunto looks funny. I like it.

2. Easier to use as a compass. I find that the Suunto compass is more accurate, gets its bearings more quickly, and is much easier to read.

3. Much more difficult to read in lower-light conditions. The light on the Suunto is really not very good. It's easy to read the face in the light, and in the complete dark, the Suunto light is OK. However, if you're sort of in between, the light on the Suunto is worthless. The Pathfinder light is like the high-beams on my car.

4. A lot more expensive to maintain. The battery life on the Suunto is terrible, even if you don't use the compass much (compasses are battery-eaters in any watch). The Pathfinder is solar-powered, which is free.

5. Easier to navigate. The menu on the Suunto is just that, a menu. Pretty straightforward and easy to navigate. The Pathfinder is a little trick.

6. Not self-setting. The Pathfinder has an atomic clock receiver, and sets itself if you aim it at the window. I find that the Suunto, once set, is completely accurate, though. But since I normally wear automatics, accuracy isn't the most important thing in the world to me.

7. Better for letting you know when the sun will set. Suunto has reference info on sunrise/sunset. This is really really useful information. It's a bummer if it's dark out before you're done setting up your campsite.

Anyway, I like both watches. If I wanted just one watch, I'd probably get the Pathfinder, because Casio quality and durability is pretty legendary (I still own an F91 that I bought in the mid-1990s). But I'm a watch dork and like to switch around. If you're in a situation, though, where you need to go downrange and consider your watch to be gear and not a fashion accessory or reminder to take a break from your hike and eat lunch, DEFINITELY get the Pathfinder.

"Pretty watch. Overcomplicated user interface." 2010-01-09

I've had many Casio ABC watches, so I'm biased. For this review, I had Casio PAW-1300t and Suunto Core (green version - latest batch) which are used interchangeable or together for a period of about 2 months.

1. The looks - the watch is big, but very conservatively designed. No weird plastic extrusions, just a simple watch with a big screen. It looks nice and professional. Casio looks a little more gimmicky, but Casio is still a solid looking watch (not like the older ABC casio watches that looked like spaceships)

2. The screen - it's nice to have a big matrix screen. Although, it may seem like a square pixel matrix, some of the pixels are actually taller than others - It's confusing for the graphs (if one tall-rectangular pixel is added is it greater difference than a reqular square pixel). Considering that there are 3 patches of matrix screens, I wish Suunto would try to do more with them (more combined data screens). There are 2 rows of tall rectangular pixels. Casio has a very small matrix screen for the graphs, but the rest of the screen is regular 7 segment digital display. It doesn't look as spiffy, but it does the job.

3. UI (user interface) - the menu system is organized like a tree. So you go inside menus to get to more menus, and then you have to back out to get back. It's a blessing and a nightmare - items are somewhat organized, but it's a hassle to get to some simple setting that's burried 3 menus deep.

3a. One big gripe with user interface: is that the barometer and altimeter are the same mode Suunto (which actually makes sense, given that both values are derived from the same pressure sensor). However, there's NO quick way to switch from one to the other. If you watch is in barometer mode, all you're going to get is barometer, if you want to change it to altimeter (or vice versa), you have to go into deep into the settings menus, find it, and change it. There's an automatic mode, but it's a gimmick, it tries to guess which mode it should be in (I prefer a more direct approach - I want to see what I want to see, not want it "thinks" I should see)

4. Clock Precision - the clock precision is outright terrible! It's a good 3-5 seconds a day. I've had cheap quartz watches that lose 5 seconds in a month. I'm no precision freak, but having my watch be off by a minute at the end of a month is unacceptable (if you're used to mechanical watches, this is not a problem :)

5. Instrument precision - pretty good. Many claim Suunto is better than Casio as far as accuracy/precision goes; I've had them side by side for a 2 months, and I don't see a difference. Barometer and altimeter are usually within the smallest measureable unit of each other (read: insignificant difference), and very close readings to the local weather station. Compasses show in the same direction. The compass on Suunto has failed me once; on a hike, it started twitching +/- 60deg (120-or-so degrees of total variance), I have not had that happen with the casio. Maybe I stepped into a magnetic anamoly - either way, I didn't like it. In general the Suunto's compass seemed twitchier than the Casio's (more needle jumping). Temperature is a useless sensor, my guess is that they only bother putting that sensor in, because the sensor is so cheap. However it works well in the water, but in air, it simply shows the temperature of the watch (which is greatly effected by your body temperature). You can take it off, and leave it for 10 minutes (if you've read this far, I'm sure you know the drill).

6. Features - Suunto doesn't dissapoint. The added benefit of Depth meter is very nice, even though it measure only to 10m (snorkeling only). The range of the pressure sensor is amazing (depth meter/altimeter/barometer are all run from the same pressure sensor). The data logging is very good; a little complicated, but very complete. The logs have the time and the measurement recorded at the desired frequency (casio, for example, only records the totals: ascend, descend, max, min; whereas suunto is a true logging device, and records actual altimeter data, every period). The sunrise/sunset display is very usefull (Casio doesn't have that). The storm alarm feature is a gimmick, it goes off in a seemingly random fashion - I don't know what algorithm they use to figure a coming storm, but it's obviously WRONG - as I had my watch go off on sunny days with no rains approaching.

At the end I chose Casio PAW1300T. As an everyday watch, it's just better built and better equipped, and it is smaller (much thinner). It's much more accurate (even without atomic connectivity), and on top of that, it gets automatically updated (to the second) every night. It's solar powered, so it doesn't need to be opened every 6 months (great concern for water-proofness in Suuntos). The modes are less cluttered(you still need a manual to learn the watch), and it looks more durable. Barometer and Altimeter have their own dedicated buttons (unlike the combined alti-baro mode on Suunto). I can't say Suunto is a bad watch, but it just didn't work for me. Casio is just as good at showing barometric trends (to predict weather). Suunto data logging is better than Casio's, but that's not saying much. If I need to log a hike to review it later, a GPS does a much better job (absolute 3d position on earth), so a simple altitude log produced by Suunto is too simplistic anyway. And as far as pacing yourself during a hike, the casio's log works just as well, without the added complications. It all came down to usability - what seems like a couple of button presses on Casio turns into a menu-down-down-enter-on-back-back-back kind of search on Suunto.

I have serious problems with this unit and with suunto:

1. The unit came with manufacturing problem: the battery is not charging completely what is a severe problem to hikers

2. The suunto's tech service & representative does not know how to fix it

3. The warrant is not international, that means if you hiking abroad you are not covered.

I believe you can have better options than this USD500 unit.

I've had a Suunto T3 Combo Pack for 2-1/2 years. During the 2 year warranty period I had to send the heart rate monitor in three times for repairs. Now, 6 months after the warranty expired, it has stopped functioning again. Rather than spending the money for out of warranty repair, I am trying a Garmin unit instead. Applying the repair costs to the purchase of a Garmin made it quite reasonable compared with the cost of repairing the Suunto. I'm sorry to have to report this because when it worked it was wonderful, but I found it to be much too unreliable and got no sympathy from Suunto about it either.

To start with the complaints:

The main view doesn't show the day of the week AND the date at the same time, but it is easy to switch between them.

Also, GPS reception is spotty at times, and you must not move while it's acquiring a signal or it'll never get one.

Also, the face IS plastic, and you need to take extra care to not scratch it all up.

Aside from those, I'm very impressed with the watch. Intuitive interface, lots of features, and interfaces seamlessly with the GPS pod and heart rate monitor.

It's expensive, but it passes as an everyday watch that's thin and comfortable (and I can pull it off in a business environment), and I think it's well worth the cost.

You should take a look at the T3 (alone) reviews for some good feedback. I really struggled whether to give this 3 stars or 4 -- really is more like a 3.7. It's good. I like that it keeps track of data, I can see how many calories I burned last week, last month, or the month before, or the month before that, etc., and keep track of how I'm doing. And the Training Effect feature is pretty cool, as is the fact that it automatically updates your activity level (and makes it tougher to hit a given Training Effect score as your activity level increases, since presumably you're in better shape).

Downsides are that the face scratches VERY easily. Manual isn't the greatest, but now that I know how it works I don't find it all THAT confusing (but it's by no means straightforward). I don't mind the rubber watchband -- it's light and water-resistant. But one end of the chest strap broke, so that the clasp pops out relatively easily, which is very annoying. I've since taped that end on, and get in and out with the other end. If it weren't for the face scratches and the chest strap breaking, I'd easily give this a 4.

The GPS pod is pretty cool, though a little finicky. I've lost the signal sometimes, and it's hard to tell that it's been lost (figured out when it was clear after 1/4 mile that my distance wasn't updating), and then hard to get it back. Also, as far as speed, it's not instantaneous (which makes sense, since it's GPS) -- think of it more as a rolling 30-second average, which might make it look like you've gone really slow and then all of a sudden really fast when it catches up. The software (which I don't have) presumably smooths it out some when it transfers to the computer. It's definitely less accurate than some other means of judging distance, particularly if you make a lot of turns, but still pretty cool as a reference.

It was bought for me as a present, and I've been very happy with it, but all-in-all it is a bit expensive for what you get.

"Great idea -- weak execution" 2007-08-07

I'm a cyclist, and after researching watches for a couple of weeks, the X6 seemed like the perfect product to track accumulated elevation gain and degree of slope. Unfortunately, the watch has some serious flaws that hinder its usefulness.

First, elevation gain: this is the watch's strongest feature and, once you learn to use it, delivers results that are easy to read, if not wholly accurate. I've found that the X6 under-reports the accumulated elevation gain by about 15% to 20%.

Next, the clinometer: as implemented in the X6, this feature is useless. When on my bike, the X6 is mounted on a Polar handlebar mount, adjusted so that when the bike is upright on flat ground, the readout displays 0 degrees, as it should. However, when I start pedaling, the readout swings wildly from 0 to 35 to 20 to 50, all in just a few pedal strokes. I never have the faintest clue what the actual degree of slope is. To put it charitably, this feature is a joke -- or at least it would be if the watch weren't so expensive.

Finally, watch features: in general, I find the watch easy to use, although the buttons require quite a firm push. I recently took the watch on a cycling trip through France, and made good use of the dual time display. The downside, as I discovered, is that you can't attach a wake-up alarm to the secondary display. That means if you have U.S. time set as the primary display, and European time on the secondary one, the alarm only sees the U.S. time. That's quite a design flaw, in my estimation. Another design flaw is that the watch is virtually unreadable in low light conditions. I find myself constantly squinting at it in order to read the large digits.

The bottom line: after four months of fairly extensive use, I'm back to my $17 Timex. The Suunto stays in my bike bag, where it only sees the light of day on bike rides. A big disappointment.

This product work great. I would definitely purchase it again. The only concern I have with it is the glass face is very exposed to hitting anything. So far it hasn't been prone to scratching. I put the first and only scratch in the glass within the first week of ownership. I have had the watch almost 4 months now and I have not put any more scratches in it but I am more careful. Other than that the watch work perfectly. I am very pleased.

I bought mine on clearance. Yes the thermometer quit working but I did like Robbie & pryed off the gray bezzle & replaced the battery. The battery is a A10 or 389/390. Make sure you clean all the contacts with a clean eraser head before re-assembly.

Also, my thermometer is reasonably accurate unlike some other comments.

A good friend of mine bought this gadget for me and I think it is a fun little thing to have. I like the thermometer....it actually comes in handy out and about as well around the house too. The flashlight is not that strong, but good enough for small tasks. I like taking it hiking and on trips. It comes with a neck strap and it is just fun to have around. I would put it in the category of "fun" gear rather than "hard core." For $15 you can't expect too much really, can you? If you are seriously looking for something to save your life lost in the woods, it will probably not be this gadget, but I like it nonetheless. I am giving my mom a hiking book and this - it is a good little inexpensive trinket to complete a gift.

"Let down by thermometer battery" 2007-11-05

A fun little gadget for people like me who imagine that when you are lost in a blizzard after fighting of a mountain lion bare handed, it will help save your life. Until then it will probably have limited practical outdoor use - maybe limited to using the flashlight to locate the lost chocolate bar in the bottom of your backpack. The most use I have had for it is the magnifier at home, for example reading the lettering on button cell batteries. Which is what I did when it was time to replace my battery because the thermometer didn't work. But hang on, the replaceable batteries are for the flashlight alone and there is no possible way they can power the thermometer & there is no way I can see to replace the thermometer battery. This was confirmed by Highgear support who kindly apologised but since I am out of warranty no luck. I used my other more useful gadget, my swiss army knife to prise off the bezel(leaving a few little gouge marks behind) and get access to the thermometer and the battery. Just need a trip to Radioshack to get a battery and a screwdriver tiny enough to remove the battery retaining clip and superglue to fix the bezel back in place..... until the next time.

Bought this off of Campmor for 80$. Once you set your local elevation the weather prediction is pretty on top of things. It will forecast probable weather patterns for the upcoming 6 hours. The compass is damn good as well, just be sure to calibrate it daily if you want really good readings. the thermometer doesnt work when it's in conctact with your skin cause the metal watch frame picks up body heat easily but if you hang it off a belt or backpack for 30 minutes you'll know exactly what temperature it is.

after owning casio, suunto version 1 and version 2's I thought would try a high gear. I bought the best High Gear watch Cabello's had and within 90 days the unit had a panel drop off. Cabello's would not exchange the unit after stating at purchase that it was warranted for one year.

Not sure what High gear will do but in my opinion this watch is not worth the price that is charged and it does not look as if they will back their warranty.

Pedometer only registers in Km, so don't expect to get your distance in miles w/o some math. So much for the false step sensor - it was off by about 2 percent.

The radio picked up the stations that I preset pretty well. After about five minutes of use a VERY annoying ringing sound cuts in - so loud that the radio cannot be heard over it. I tried resetting it, replacing the battery, using different headphones, and finally smashing the unit. Guess which one solved my problem...

The performance and usability of this watch simply do not justify its price tag.

1. The HRM function isn't reliable. My $30 unbranded HRM maintains a better wireless connection to the chest strap. Occasionally the X6HR measures false heart rate spikes up to 190. Occasional drop outs or false spikes are not a problem for a simple HRM, but a real pain when you're using the X6HR to record over time, as it screws up heart rate statistics.

2. The buttons are too 'mushy'. It's hard to tell when a button has been properly pressed.

3. The software the comes with the watch is clunky and ugly.

Overall, if you are looking at the X6HR, look at the Polar AXN500.

I bought the suunto X6hrt after having 2 polars and getting sick of their fragility during training. The suunto site isn't that clear about the product but I bought it expecting at least the same level of functions that I got in simpler polar watches. In this model, compass, barometer, altimeter look goods, but the HR function only measures the current HR, nothing else. What about % of max HR (very easy to implement) and calories expendure?

For a USD 1,000 watch, it really doesn't pay off if you need some HR basic functions.

The first X6HRM I purchased was very flaky, with the screen blanking out after a button was pushed. I was about to return it, but found out there was a recall. The new unit functions flawlessly and is great if you have regular workouts you do. With altimeter, HRM and timer saving data you can download workout profiles to your PC (average software but functional) and overlay curves to check progress during the season or year-to-year.

The only minor complaint is that the unit sucks down batteries. They're easy to replace though, so buy a few spares.

GPS: Obviously it can't do what a handheld unit can, but it holds it own for all the GPS functionality. The X10 can take a minute or two to lock on to a signal when you first activate the GPS, but once it has a lock, I've never lost signal on all hikes/bikes (outside, obviously concrete buildings are a dead zone). The on-screen activity data gives all the essentials: current/average speeds, min/max speed, time/distance traveled, and elevation traveled as well as min/max elevation. Adding the compass and "nav" feature means you can at least point yourself in the right direction to get back to where your activity started - very handy when exploring new trails. I have not used the routes feature, but I imagine it could be very useful for more critical uses like mountaineering.

GPS software: not the most elegant, but it does the trick. Easy to export a text file which can be converted to kml and used with google earth or a host of other online applications for viewing on a nice map. Two big issues here: 1) PC-only, no Mac. 2) no basemap in the software - as in, you just see a red line of your track, there is no map underneath it. You can import map images from google earth, or wherever, but you have to calibrate them. Not worth it, just export and use elsewhere.

ABC (altimeter/barometer/compass): excellent, Suunto really has this part down.

Temperature: yes, it reads temp, but unless you wear the watch on a string around your neck, the reading is going to be about 5 degrees less than your body temp. You can take the watch off, but the sensor is slow and you'll have to wait about 10 minutes to get an accurate reading of ambient temp.

Battery life: fantastic! After the first full-charge, I was able to use the watch for almost a month before I actually drained it. This included at least 5 trips longer than 1-hour recorded at the highest GPS setting (1 second intervals), and only plugged in via USB to download the trips for a few minutes at a time.

Screen visibility: another less than great rating here. The backlight is fine, but you need a fair bit of light to read the numbers easily, it's a low contrast screen. I'd recommend against the military version here, if I had to redo, I'd go for the standard.

Durability/wearability: Very tough. My X10 has taken a few good whacks on mountain bike rides, no problems but a small scuff. It's a big watch, yes, but actually quite light, so if you can deal with the visual size, it's not an issue. Strap is comfy with good adjustability (although probably won't get small enough for very small wrists, ladies).

Overall, 4 out of 5. A product with excellent core functionality that could be top-notch with some peripheral improvements.

"Military model may be difficult to read." 2009-10-26

I bought the X10 military model. The display is very dark and nearly always difficult to read (if you get it just right in the light, it can be read clearly). I am not sure if this is by design (for stealth), or is a problem with this model, or if it is a problem is with this particular watch. We have changed the settings to optimize the display without reasonable improvement. It never looks like the picture shown. It is dark and uneven (parts of the screen are more difficult to read than others).

In any event, it is being exchanged for the "regular" model.

I own a Suunto X6HR and have loved the watch. Suunto makes great products. I am sure the "regular" X10 will be "the ticket."

"Tough & Great Quality" 2009-11-12

I've had my Vector for a couple years now. Didn't really wear it till I joined the Army over a year ago, though. I'm in the Infantry and it's been through a lot of tough conditions and is still going strong. Still the original band, showing no signs of distress. I replace the battery about every year and a half when the warning comes up.

I LOVE the barometric pressure trend window on the face, let's me know at a glance if we're getting good weather or bad while out on a mission. You will wonder how you ever got a long without it.

The compass is surprisingly accurate if calibrated regularly and cross-checked against known points. You can quick-access the compass by just pushing one button--great for getting a quick bearing while yr on the move, just make sure it's away from ferrous metals, of course. Much faster than trying to pull out my real compass. The bubble-level built into the face is great for that extra-level of accuracy that I've come to expect from Suunto.

The altimeter isn't as dependable in my opinion. But, Suunto makes it extremely easy to correct it to known elevation in about 3 seconds. I typically reset it every morning when I know my elevation, but it deviates too much in my opinion throughout the day.

It's also got the thermometer. You can set it for metric or english units, but it's kind of a pain to do it. (Suunto, it would be nice to make a one-touch button to switch back and forth.) Oh, and obviously it does military time, too.

Yes, it's a big watch, but the crystal is actually plastic, so it is extremely light and comfortable to wear. Despite being plastic and being through all the sand/dirt/rocks, etc., my watch face has very little scratching at all.

There are more features I love about this watch, but I hit the main ones here. I didn't like this watch till I actually started wearing it in the Army.

This is the Watch that put Suunto on the map in 1999. It's been to the top of Mt. Everest.

Pros:

1. Mountaineers, hikers, climbers will enjoy the Triple Sensor, Altitude, Temperature, Compass features.

2. Very lightweight and surprisingly comfortable.

3. Trendy large diameter size.

4. Super easy to read display.

5. Worn by the members of Television's Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis.

Cons:

1. EL backlight requires holding upper right button for 2 seconds to activate.

2. Kind of thick and bulky at 15mm

3. Water resistance sketchy. Mariners, divers, sailors need not apply.

4. Kind of old news. Casio now sells similar but possibly more fashionable Pathfinder and ProTrek models.

"Suunto Vector" 2009-09-15

I've owned the Vector for many, many years and have been generally very pleased with it. In the pre-Vector days, I had a Casio (returned, pain in the a** to use) and an Avocet (stopped using it when I learned the cost of its batteries). It is easily the easiest to use and the most accurate of the three. Suunto has been excellent when I have needed assistance. I do find that even when I set the altitude at the beginning of a climb, the summit reading may not be exactly correct (and vice versa). The compass needs to be recalibrated once in a while, especially is you use it near a computer (or magnets). But it's easy to do. The thermometer is accurate only within 3 degrees and gives the temperature of your wrist (like I need to know that). But, the unit has been very reliable, fairly accurate for all its functions, and is easier to use than any other I have tried. And, yes, I have taken it shallow water swimming and caving for many hours at a time with no leakage or problems, not once but many times. I don't do this any longer as it is finally beginning to show wear on the gaskets.

I've owned the same Suunto Vector since 2001.

According to my life insurance policy I don't climb mountains, Ice Climb or rock climb.. and so I can only say that I've used this watch in a serious way in a lot of different conditions and never had any trouble with it. In fact I've also owned Garmin, Timex and Polar products and this watch has outlasted them all.

"Two failures in 3 years" 2007-07-31

I got a vector 3 years ago and was very pleased with it most of the time. The altimiter is not very useful because it is based off barometric pressure so your reading will vary wildly and you need to keep resetting it. The big flaw with this watch is that in 3 years the face has broken twice. The first time the bezel broke off. Luckly it was still under warranty and they replaced it. Now the faceplate has cracked and is letting moisture in. I don't use the watch for any crazy sports, it's just my everyday watch so the fact that it is broken astounds me. Sunnto have a minimum $85 repair charge, which could go up, so at this stage I'm bowing out with two watch failures in 3 years.

This compass is small enough to fit in a watch pocket, yet it's easy to read and accurate, within its size limits. It's marked in five degree increments, white print on black, and has luminous dots in all the right places. It's not built to do pinpoint triangulation, but it takes up no room in a belt pack and dependably gets me back to my car after a day hike.

I actually use the pin-on feature: It keeps me on line on archaeological survey transects, and I can have both hands free.

This is the same design as the old Swedish Silva 27. I was happy to see that my new Brunton 27 still says "Made in Sweden".

"Simple and Easy" 2009-07-15

As a triathlete I'm always looking for the next magic electronic workout item. I currently love my Powertap for the bike and now I can add the T3C to that list of loves. It's not that complex to operate compared to other systems out there. The instructions are clear for those that have used HRMs and Power meters before.

I did research on all running packs from Suunto, Polar and Garmin. The direct results from friends with the new small Garmin is that it is unreliable and the Polar too expensive and complicated. I would prefer the t6 but for the money the t3 is perfect. Plus I don't lose reception when trail running.

I also got the bike pod and setting up the foot and bike pod is as easy as setting up a basic bike computer. The watch transitions from bike to run easily.

If you have never used an HRM before, you may find this difficult to set up as its not a simple Timex but compared to a Polar this thing was easy.

I have used the system for 4 weeks by now and the watch is really great for training. The watch has a good strap that is solid and with a good grip. The watch is overall a good watch with clear reading of the display. The information presented is OK.

The revised heartrate monitor is a significant improvement over the old one. The old would would not reliably provide heart rate information, those problem are all gone with the new model.

The watch provides a lot of information and the interface to the PC is awesome. I am much happier with this system compared to the T3 I had before.

The alarm on the watch is not easily accessible and also not very loud, so the watch has some weaknesses as a general utility.

With the goal of training for the 2009 Walt Disney World Marathon, I sought a tool that would keep me informed during my workouts. This is not it. I read lots of reviews and also examined this item in person in a store. I purchased it hoping I would be able to navigate it's controls more easily than other users since I consider myself technically adept. As other reviewers said (and I should have listened) this product is too difficult to operate and most importantly, the manual is unclear and incomplete.

To Amazon's credit, the return process was remarkably easy! Full refund, postage paid, no questions asked. Thank you! Just be sure you keep ALL of your original packaging if you are as stubborn as me and decide to buy this. Otherwise, they will not likely take it back.

Subsequently, instead of choosing value as the deciding factor in picking my training tool, I chose quality. I wear a GPS enabled Garmin with a bezel/touch screen and love it. I wore it during training and as I ran and finished the WDW Marathon . I love it.

For the last probably 10 years I was a happy Amazon customer. That changed with my last Running Pack order. Amazon priced out the pack for $148.25. I found that a really great deal compared to other companies so I went ahead and bought it. The real seller of the product was `Watchsavings' (or Jomashop) which sent me the product by UPS ground. But it turned out that they sent me the wrong product. So I called in and requested the running pack I ordered and what would be the best way to proceed. First of all, `Watchsavings' told me that they don't have the product al all and it was Amazon's mistake they put it on their website for that "great deal". They suggested that I send the wrong product back and order the pack instead from `Jomashop' (was out of stock). Next thing was I called Amazon and they told me that it was Watchsavings' product and I would have to deal with them! Great!! At that time I checked the Amazon website again for the T3 Running pack and now they offered it from another seller for $250, not really the amount I spent. What great situation: none of these two felt somehow responsible for the mistake or was able to deliver the product I ordered for the price I (of course) already paid. I sent the wrong delivery back to Watchsavings and got finally after one month my money back. I ordered the T3 running pack with another Internet seller, which was still cheaper that Amazon and provided an excellent service compared to Amazon or Watchsavings. I gave one star because I got my money back. Do not by from Amazon! Either they want to sell something they don't have or they don't feel responsible for the seller on their profile. I'm really, really disappointed with such a professional company!

"Worked well in Australian desert" 2009-09-20

I used this watch for 2 weeks in the outback. It was charged in the U.S. before the trip. Battery lasted for all two weeks on full charge, even though I kept playing with it and trying out most of the settings in Australia. Got signal even under trees, of course, no dense jungles in the outback. Temperature ranged from 35C (120F) daytime to 8C (44F) nighttime.

At home, in the temperate U.S. zone, did I not get any signal in my office building (30 ft from nearest windows, two stories below top of building. At my apt, did not get all the satellites since I faced only northeast direction. Close to the window, however, the watch received about 6 or so.

Had fun using the watch for those two weeks, but it's so obviously built for men (non-flexible portion of watch measures 2.5") that I'll probably never use it again unless in the wilderness.

I bought the X10 to replace my X9i which I was disappointed with since I'd bought it. The interface is identical as the X9i which is to say that it's quite good. The main improvement is that the GPS receiver is so much better than the X9. I turned it on and had a fix for the very first time in just over a minute. On subsequent activations, it takes even less time. I've had no problems tracking satellites from inside armored vehicles while traveling in Iraq (when my eTrex wouldn't even pull a signal!). The battery seems much improved as well as I've only charge it twice in the first two months. Overall this is a good GPS that you can carry with you all the time!

"Poor product and customer service" 2009-09-09

This purchase has been a nightmare. I purchased from DataVision Computer Video Inc through Amazon a $399.99 a Suunto X10 Military GPS watch. My wife received this product and did not open it before sending it to me. I am in Iraq and was looking forward to getting my new watch. Unfortunately when I received it it did not work at all the watch would not turn on at all even after being charged. I called DataVision Computer Video Inc the seller. I informed them that I had registered the product with Sunnto and that I could not send it back as I am at a remote site in Iraq and I cannot insure anything going through the mail. They promptly told me to contact Sunnto which I told them I already had and Sunnto said the symptoms the watch displayed required it to be replaced and to contact the seller. I asked DataVision Computer Video Inc to annotate in their records that it would be October to November time frame before I could send it back since I will be back in the States on leave. They told me since it would be so long to send it back to Sunnto myself since that was all they would do anyway and I have a year to take care of it from date of purchase. I thought DataVision Computer Video Inc would handle this issue like replacing the watch since they are the seller but I guess I was wrong. I'll deal with it when I'm home on leave it's not like I don't have better things to do with that time. Needless to say I will not be buying anything from Amazon or Data Vision in the future. This is a $400.00 fiasco that even if resolved while I'm on leave does not guarantee that I will have a watch in hand before I return to Iraq and that the new one I get won't have the same or other problems.

"Needs Much Improved Glue" 2009-07-24

Operationally a good product. I rate it low because a $400-$500 watch should not have the craftsmanship problems this has. Both my son and I have one, and we both have had the same problems.

It's all about the glue used to hold the top cover. It's terrible. Our covers came off after 2 months of normal day to day wear. I sent mine back and Suunto repaired it, no charge. But they obviously used the same substandard adhesive because the cover popped off one month later. Just 2 days ago one of the rubber caps that cover one of the functions button came off too, because of that crappy adhesive. Instead of sending it back I re-glued it with Gorilla Glue, which should hold.

Suunto replaced my son's watch, as both the top cover and most of the rubber button caps came off completely.

Though I like the watch, I absolutely cannot recommend it. By the way, a guy I work with has the same model and his top cover came off too.

Suunto, please fix this problem. I wouldn't pay $50 for this product.

"NOT DURABLE ENOUGH FOR DEPLOYMENT USE" 2009-06-29

This watch was a great purchase for the first few weeks that I had it; as far as functionality it has performed superbly. A few weeks after I purchased this watch (the X10 Military) I deployed to Iraq and planned on using this watch with my work in the Army here.

The watch has continued to serve fairly well, until I had about 2 months in country. The bezel/upper-case (a flexible rubber ring) is only attached by two rubber flanges that fit into the hard plastic body of the watch. First (at about 60 days) one of the flanges failed, then in another 30 days, the second flange failed. I have been able to superglue the bezel back onto the case (and probably voided the warranty, but I can't wait months to get this back and forth) but I am very dissapointed that a watch that cost me $500.00 USD and is listed as a "military" model, cannot handle exposure to the elements on my wrist for less than 3 months.

I think the concept and design of this watch is great, but I hope that Suunto is able to better incorporate some "painful" product testing before you market something to the military who will depend on it.

I got my Suunto X6HR while at an adventure race in Borneo in 2002 and have used it extensively since. I have found the watch to be an overall great training and racing tool over the years. I would agree that battery life is not the strongest feature (my experience has been two per year for the watch and one a year for the chest strap - the battery life is significantly reduced if connected to the computer often). I have raced with this watch, trained with it and just worn it around town and have found it to be one my favorites (I have about eight watches in all!) One issue that does iritate me about it is the altitude setting goes back to zero each time the battery is changed and the process to bring it back up to 6660 (my home altitude) requires several minutes of button pushing/holding. Overall, this has been a great watch for me and I would recommend it to a friend.

I wear my X6HR in a regular environment (office, home), nothing near extreme condition. However, in less than a year, I foung the rubber band of the heart monitor is broken in many placed and the rubber became brittle with many hairline cracks. This is clearly a quality issue with the material used for the watch. In a trip to the Keys, FL, I found that the little rubber ring that holds the band of the watch in place broke in two piece much like what happed to the heart rate monitor band. The band itself also has many small cracks. I am sure the band will break in half sooner or later. The LCD on the watch also became fuzzy when I wear it around beaches. This is supposed to be a watch that you can bring to an expedition, yet it failed miserably in a everyday environment. If you are looking for a tough watch, look elsewhere. My Casio G-shock never gives me any headache that this watch gives.

The X6HR has a great range of functions. However, the user interface and reliability of the product need serious work before its steep pricetag can be justified.

- Bezel buttons give no positive feedback, so you need to look closely at the screen to confirm button presses.

- The HRM function seems both unreliable. Heart rate occasionally drops out or spikes to double for no reason. I've parallel tested with a $30 HRM, which seems more reliable.

- The compass function is unbelievably poorly designed. Instead of drawing a compass on the face, or indicating N/S/E/W points around the bezel, the watch tells you the number of degrees you are facing, or prints N, NW, W, SE, etc on the screen. This is a completely counterintuitive way of displaying the information.

- The PC connection software looks like it was written in the 1990s- provides little functionality and poor usability.

This watch had great promise... but it has proven very disappointing in design.

The Xchanger delayed me a bit with Windows 7, but I resolved that within a short time. The Timex website will track progress and apprears to be very complete. I received the watch today and was enjoying the features. However, the PC data link does not work. The watch cannot find the PC and I cannot find any help. Could just be me, but I have tried reading all I can and still the USB wireless connection is useless. The driver installed without any issues, but will not function as advertised. The Manual points to a Link for the software that is dead.

I loved this product at first. I researched it well and knew exactly what I was getting. I compared the Garmin to this one and they are not meant for the same purposes. I have bad asthma and was training for a half marathon. I wanted to be able to go out my door and run in any direction and know how far I went. The Garmin is great if you want to track your routes, upload the data and don't mind something bulky on your wrist. This watch has a more comfortable chest strap that you can put in a washing machine and clean. The "OwnZones" checks your heart rate before exercising and judges your heart rate zones based on how cardio tired. This helps prevent over training.

The training program allows you to set goals (weight loss, improving fitness, or maximizing fitness) and creates a program to fit your needs. This does not mean it says bike this long, run this long, etc. Instead it gives you a weeks worth of timing in each heart rate zone that you should do to meet those goals. Doesn't matter what activities you do. There are no special bike attachments or anything.

I took my watch with GPS out a couple times with my bike and bike computer. The distances on the bike computer and the watch were only 0.1 miles different from each other. This is similar to what friends get with their Garmin. However, I live in a desert and don't have a lot of trees to contend with.

I bought this for the GPS unit features. It's not so great. Complaints are:

-Only shows one number on each screen, paginating to different screens is tedious while I am running!

-Does not beep at each mile marker like the garmin does (my fiance has the garmin)

-The watch itself is comfortable on, but when I take it off its a bit awkward and kinda hurts a bit.

-GPS took a while to start working, finally figure out (after 3 runs) how to switch the mode and got it working.

-Not worth the $$, I decided to return it and get the garmin 305.

"Disappointing" 2010-01-05

I bought this in the Fall of 2003 to be able to have a quick compass/elevation check on unfamiliar trails. It handles those tasks well.

However, the strap breaks too soon compared to other watches. And band replacement is far too difficult compared to other watches. A slightly shorter replacement pin (or slightly bending a replacement pin to make it shorter) may be the only practical solution to a replacement problem if you're trying to do this in the field. Also, the back is difficult to remove (over the years) compared to other watches (a 1 Yuan coin seems to be the best fit for the slot on the back).

The alarm is useless as it simply cannot be heard. The product manual is poorly written, which is odd because the Finns have great language skills.

So, although I like the watch, the on-going maintenance issues make it less than highly recommended.

I've had this watch for four years and it's taken a real beating across the world. I've dropped it on tile, concrete, and asphalt from heights up to 10 feet and it still works fine. The only problem I've had it the strap, rather the clasp keeping the watch band closed. It's gotten to the point where a mere movement of my hand will spring it open leaving the watch dangling at an odd angle. I'm reluctant to shell out the $120 for a new band because all I need is a new clasp.

I owned several of these. The watch is works fine for hiking etc. The overall durability of the watch is decent but not rugged enough for intensive outdoor use, and within 1-2 years the strap breaks without any cause (the strap is mostly plastic pierced with holes on all versions- stainless steel or titanium). The durability of the strap is very poor and Suunto must know it since it is only under warranty for 1 year as opposed to 2 year warranty for the watch. Strap replacement by Suunto out of warranty is almost $100 so you'd better find a better strap after breaking the first time! I haven't found yet whether non-Suunto straps can be adjusted on it.

The decision is yours whether it is worth the money...

I have owned my Observer since late 2005. It has been a great Watch. I initially wanted one of the cheaper, simpler Suuntos, but found this one discounted so for just a little bit more and have never regretted purchasing it instead. The watch looks good too, it has a nice contrast of the stainless and black band and its not too big and does not look very much like a Dive watch or a GPS on your arm.

Like some other reviewers have noted, the watch does take a little getting used to in mastering the buttons, but it becomes easy with use. Keep the instruction book handy at first.

After about 18 months the battery went dead. The battery is supposed to be owner changeable, but I messed up the back trying to get it off and had to send it back for replacement. This is the only concern that I have ever had with the watch. I noticed today that a battery replacement kit is offered on Amazon for about $9. I'm going to ensure that it will fit my watch and purchase one for next time.

Almost from the beginning this so-called instrument has given me different elevation gain readings for the same hike with the readings varying as much as 50%. When I called their so-called customer service I was treated with no concern, like I was some kind of idiot. This instrument is very complicated and the manual as well as very detailed and not easy to deal with. Their customer service person could use a basic course in "how to treat people with dignity." Or find a job where she only deals with rocks and other inanimate objects. I must now send my intrument in for them to check manually. So much for an over $200 purchase.

I got this watch about 9 months ago, and was fairly happy with it until it stopped working. It went through the first battery in about 5 months and after having it changed it never seemed the same. I tripped during a race this Fall and while I didn't hit it on the pavement, it reset from the shock. Poof, mile 4 of a half marathon and my watch reads 00:00. Since then it's repeatedly reset at the slightest bump or jostle and now the battery's dead again. Now I have no watch and am not sure I want to give Garmin any more of my money.

I have been using the 50 for approx 4 months. The set up and operation of the unit are not very intuitive. However once set up it is acceptable. Just be careful not to accidently push 2 buttons at the same time. This is easy to do when trying to push one side button with your index finger while applying counter pressure with the thumb.

Push 2 and the watch will reset. If it does then you will lose anything in the memory. Not very nice if you haven't downloaded the workouts in memory or are in the middle of a long run.

Been using this sucker with HR strap and footpod for about 6 months now, running a LOT.

Pros:

*I had never used a HR monitor before. Fantastic training method. Can't compare it to any other HR monitors (e.g. Polar), but compared to NOT using a HR monitor for training, it gets five stars.

*Small, lightweight, waterproof.

*Got the entire set (watch, HR monitor, and foot pod) for $120.

Cons:

*Having used many other regular watches, from Casio to Timex's Ironman, as a basic watch, or even a workout watch, it's crappy. First of all, the light from the light button does NOT stay on long enough. Some of us actually exercise at night, you know? Ironman watch: much better.

*Effectively non-standard start/stop/save button functionality. That face button for lap is just plain annoying. The buttons in general I don't find that good. And, if I'm trying to time many short events (sprint times of other people) it's a total pain and slow to be able to start, stop, clear, and restart. I realize that's not what it's necessarily made for, but it's annoying.

*Battery life is marginal. My footpod battery was dead out of the box when new. That was annoying. Had the system 6 months, and changed the watch battery twice now and the footpod once (total of four batteries in six months if you count the DOA footpod). Glad I'm comfortable doing so myself, as paying someone to do it would be annoying. That said, I do like replaceable better than a rechargeable watch itself as sometimes you're just not near power. Best would be if I felt comfortable enough to try out the RCR-2032 batteries (rechargeable versions; they're out there) but am worried that the higher voltage will kill it.

Overall, if you've never used a HR monitor system, I think it's just dandy. But, I wish the watch were as functional and high quality as the Ironman series, the light stayed on longer, the buttons were better, and DEFINITELY wish that it took a velcro sports watch band.

My wife loves it! she has used it so much for her runs that the battery went out in 6 months! We went to a watch store to change it. It had no power unless we adjusted it, then it would lose power again...uggg. My wife loved it so much we just got a new one. I hope the battery last longer, if not, looks like she'll have another one for her birthday (easy gift). The set up is a bit of a pain, but if you call Garmin, they can help and it's only a one time deal. Other than the set up & battery, it's great. Tracks speed, distance thru-out the run (i.e. when you slow down it shows you on the computer via graph and text when and how long during the run you slowed down and what speed you going). Pretty cool. Just make sure you get the foot pod also.

I have the watch with heart rate monitor, and also purchased the foot pod separately. LOVE these items! I am an avid runner and these have helped me to improve my training greatly. Easy to use. The only thing I found slightly annoying was for the first few times using the heart rate monitor & foot pod together, I had to pair them each time - they didn't each automatically pair as the manual said they would. Then in future uses, if I was only using one of the two devices, I had to pair it again separately for the watch to read it. After about 10 or so times of the pairing issues, the devices now pair without problems. Very satidsied - makes training more fun & functional. I have a very small frame & am 33 in. around at the chest...so the heart rate monitor is too big for me. However, since I am always weraing a sports bra/top with built in bra, I just make sure the monitor is held in place with the elastic from my bra, and it works fine.

"Timex Ironman" 2009-10-03

When I ordered the Timex Ironman there were only two reviews -both of which were very negative, but I ordered despite that because comparable GPS watches were much more expensive. I have had no problems with either the watch or the GPS. The only reason I did not give it five stars is that you need the instruction book to use all of the features of the system. It is not user friendly, but when instructions are followed, it works as promised.

Ugh. I have been using this watch for over a month and have yet to have it work correctly. I have already had to glue the transmitter piece back together. If I do manage to find a connection I had better be careful not to run within 10 miles of the nearest ground projection or the satellite connection will be broken. Any stray wispy cloud or piece of floating cottonwood can cause the satellite connection to be lost. I love how the literature says it is great for hiking. Maybe above the treeline and cloud cover. So, if you are planning a trip to the top of Mount Everest, this may be the watch for you. Otherwise, save your money and your sanity.

I bought this watch on ebay brand new about three weeks ago (did not even realized it was women's watch).For the record I live in Chicago, US - so I'm sure I have plenty of satellites over my had

Ok here it goes. The manual says it takes about 5 minutes to connect watch to satellite first time or if you move from your location by hundreds of miles - well; it took me over sixty minute to connect first time. The manual say every next time you turn it on it takes about 45seconds -it takes me every time about 15 minutes when I try to connect each day.

Then when I jog this over glorified stop watch disconnects from satellite on average every 60 seconds. And if you happen to be in stopwatch/distance mode it will not beep to let you know that you are disconnected. So you have to look at this dam watch every 15seconds to see if the mileage updates.

Speaking of "dates" the time does not displays correctly ether. It has dual time zones, but one shows correct date but hour is way off and the other shows time with one hour difference but date way off.

They advertise it to be water resistant up to 100 meters - but the manual say: it will not measure distance or speed under water and not to push any buttons because it may leak. I guess thay made it water resistant so then you though it into a lake it will stay there for next generations.

So this morning after running about 3 miles and the watch showing .545 mile I took the receiver and smashed it against the wall -there goes my $155.00.

Do yourself a favor, don't by it

This watch was a great purchase for the first few weeks that I had it; as far as functionality it has performed superbly. A few weeks after I purchased this watch (the X10 Military) I deployed to Iraq and planned on using this watch with my work in the Army here.

The watch has continued to serve fairly well, until I had about 2 months in country. The bezel/upper-case (a flexible rubber ring) is only attached by two rubber flanges that fit into the hard plastic body of the watch. First (at about 60 days) one of the flanges failed, then in another 30 days, the second flange failed. I have been able to superglue the bezel back onto the case (and probably voided the warranty, but I can't wait months to get this back and forth) but I am very dissapointed that a watch that cost me $500.00 USD and is listed as a "military" model, cannot handle exposure to the elements on my wrist for less than 3 months.

I think the concept and design of this watch is great, but I hope that Suunto is able to better incorporate some "painful" product testing before you market something to the military who will depend on it.

This product works as advertised. The associated software works as well. Thus I have no complaints about the product and therefore can recommend the purchasing of this product.

However, my intended use of this product was to work in conjunction with my Timex heart rate monitor, speedometer, and watch. Thus this data recorder is part of a larger system for collecting fitness data.

I went with Timex vs. some of there competitors in this space as the watch and HR monitor were gifts. Overall I have been pleased with the system (although the HR sensors went bad sooner than I thought they should). But the Timex philosophy was to keep the size of the watch unit relatively small so that it could be used as your day to day watch. Therefore the overall system is broken up into pieces (this data recorder being one.)

To use the overall system, you have to strap on the watch, the HR band, the GPS unit, and the data recorder. Then you have to get the system working and synched up with the watch prior to starting your workout. This process, while not painful, is not elegant. Thus I am not convinced this multi-unit approach is optimal.

Again, this unit (and the overall Timex fitness system) work as advertised. If you don't mind having several units strapped to yourself to generate and record your workout information, then this system is likely something you should consider purchasing. If you would prefer a single unit that is larger but more integrated, then keep looking.

I bought a refurb at a healthy savings and it seems to be working fine. The most cumbersome part of the heart rate monitoring system is the chest band, but this little gizmo clips easily onto accessible clothing. The pulse rate (I don't have the GPS unit) is stored every two seconds for an excellent record of cardiac activity during exercise. It seems to be quite accurate by manual and concurrent automated cross checks. It downloads automatically when connected to it's USB cable. The computer can be programmed to erase the record as soon as it is downloaded. I haven't reached its memory capacity yet, with about 20 hours in one day so far, but notice that with longer continuous sessions, it starts overwriting from the beginning of the session after several hours. This requires stopping and restarting occasionally if you're on a whole-day excursion. I presume that adding GPS data would significantly lower the available storage time.

The only downside is that it occasionally turns itself off, presumably from loss of signal which may be faulty contact of the chest strap transmitter or distance from the chest. As a tall person, I've found that this happens if I place the recorder in a pants pocket as well. Now I just clip it to my collar and find it very reliable after a heavy month of almost daily use.

I've only been using this recorder for about 3 weeks, but I'm very pleased. I had no troubling getting it to sync with my heart rate monitor (I don't have a GPS transmitter). It does have a fairly short reception distance though. It will work on your belt area, but not much further. On a stationary bike, I clipped mine to the handlebars and a few minutes into the routine it lost synchronization. I've not had that problem if I wear it on the waist trim of shorts etc. It uploads instantly and without a hitch to the included software that allows you to track all sort of trends. The actual heart rate data can be exported as ascii data into other products to do more sophisticated analyses if you want, but the dozen or so ways to view things within the included software are very good.

The data recorder is an ok toy. I've had it cut out on me while it was supposed to be recording a couple of times. It doesn't link to the watch, so any timing infor from the watch is not kept. The PC program supplied with it is ok, would be much better if the plotted track could be coordinated with google maps or something of that sort. But it does a nice job of tracking work-outs and stores info in a very logical form. Overall I would just say that it is ok.

I've been wearing Timex watches for running for at least the past 15 years. I've been using a Timex Heart Rate Monitor watch, a data recorder and this GPS Speed and Distance sensor for the past four years. Unfortunately, I've been very frustrated with Timex because the watches have repeatedly stopped working for no good reason and now the GPS Speed and Distance sensor has stopped working. I just received another Heart Rate Monitor replacement because it'd stopped working so I'm not going to go through the trouble of replacing this latest breakdown. When it's worked, it's been ok, not great, just ok. The thing that's upset me is that I haven't been able to share my data with anyone on the web like everyone is able to do with other similar units. Also, the software for recording the data hasn't been updated in years, it's almost as if Timex just decided to stop trying to compete with Garmin and Polar.

I just wish I hadn't made the mistake of sticking with Timex all these years, it's been frustrating...

I bought this for my wife as she was training for a 10 mile run. I have had success with Iron Mans, plus it was a petite watch with powder blue accents - perfect for a woman, and not some big thing she'd have to wear on her wrist. Watch and heart rate monitor worked great, but the GPS function was shaky - it dropped out and did not register the distance correctly. I returned the product and the rep told me that this model has been out for a while. I am thinking there is newer technology, and I hope Timex comes out with an updated model.

I purchased this system to help with tracking my pacing and distance when training for the half marathon. But although the Bodylink system works well, there are a few problems with the watch design that if I had known I would not have purchased this item:

It takes too long to acquire the satellites.

It SHUTS down if I am inactive for 10 mins......this has happened to me several times when starting a race....So unless the race starts as soon as I acquire the satellite, I have to be running in circles to keep the watch functioning before it automatically shuts off. There is no way to disable this feature.

So although I love having the watch and checking my pacing, I am tired of the frustration I endure when ever I try to use it to compete in a race.

My only complaints are that it takes an excessive amount of time to link up to a GPS and the display is pretty small because there is so much information on it. When I opened the package I realized that this is definitely a woman's watch. That's fine, because I got it for my wife, but I was hoping to use it too. Then, within the first 5 minutes of having it out of the package, the battery door on the GPS unit got stuck and I broke it trying to un-stick it. I managed to rig it to work.

When I took it outside to try to acquire the satellites, I found out that the light that shows if you have the satellites is not nearly bright enough to see in the sunlight.

The watch is not medium sized as advertised, but pretty darn small. That's fine, but the main screen for exercising has three lines of info on it. The numbers are so small, you really have to look at it, not just glance at it like I am used to doing with other HRMs.

Other than those issues, it did work well!

First of all, please allow me to state that I LOVE my Suunto t6c! The heart rate monitor and foot pod are exceptional. Therefore, despite the admonishments of some of my fellow Amazonians about the GPS unit's unreliability, I figured I'd give the product a try. BIG MISTAKE! I took the unit out for a "test drive" on a 5-mile run this morning. Despite the fact that I live in a relatively open area, the unit repeatedly lost the satellite. It also gave false speeds throughout my run (last time I checked I could not run 13 miles per hour -- I'm lucky if I can accomplish half of that for a short period of time!).

Post-run, when I downloaded the data from this morning's outing to my t6C, the graph resembled the EKG of a college kid who drank too many Red Bulls and washed it down with Pop Rocks; as my "speeds" ranged from 4 MPH to 13 MPH sporadically.

Bottom Line: The Suunto foot pod is reliable right out of the box, so I'd suggest sticking to that. As for the G-P-S, it is B-A-D!

I bought this and put it to use on an 8 mile run 4 days after it arrived. It catches on to the satellite but have constant trouble hanging on to the signal as I run. As a result the readings on the T3 fades in and out. It is a very frustrating experience. I had thought of using this to compare against the foot pod, however T3 only allows the use of one (either the foot pod or GPS pod) at a time. Though the foot pod requires frequent calibration it is atleast consistent. I returned the product. I have read better reviews about Garmin. Garmin can cost 3 times as much. At this point, however I am willing to pay extra to get better reliability.

I purchaced the Suunto T4 and added the GPS to track speed and distance. My wife uses the Garmin 205 and the GPS reception on the Garmin is far superior. Suunto GPS takes along time to initially find a satellite. Once you have a signal it drops it throughout your run. I run in a rural area and still have bad reception. I used the garmin 205 for a couple years and it had very reliable reception. I am considering the foot pod due to the GPS problems.

Have had my T6 for nearly 3 years with bike, shoe and now GPS pods. Have had GPS pod over a year and use it across several sports-- road and MT biking, running, adventure racing, and kayaking. Perfect tool for Ironmans, ARs, ultra-distance events-- Does everything I need it to do very well and unlike the other pods requires no calibration. Exceptional overall accuracy but for slower sports the momentary speed numbers may not always stay stable due to GPS inherent positional errors- not a Suunto problem but a GPS satellite problem. If you watch for a couple seconds you'll have a solid feel for your actual speed-- this is only an issue while running; my shoe pod has been fantastic when I've used it by comparison. Both are more than adequate for distance and average pacing and speed while biking is dead on. Distance is always accurate. Antenna sensitivity has been good for me; challenge has been the link between watch and pod, they need to be within arm's length to keep a good connection. Jersey pocket or same arm as watch is fine. Battery life 18-20 hours on alkalines, 30+ hours on lithium aaa's. I wouldn't trade mine for anything but only wish it added GPS altitude and lat/long/grid readouts to my T6.

This pod plus a T6 replaced my annoyingly unreliable Garmin Edge 305, and I could not be happier. The GPS has worked flawlessly. I use it for road biking and trail running. It finds satellites fast and holds reception even under fairly heavy tree and cloud cover. I use the arm strap for running and it's very comfortable. On my bike I just throw it in a pocket in my handlebar bag and I'm good to go. The battery life is longer than advertised. I wanted to check the accuracy, so I ran several laps on a quarter mile track and it was never more than 1/100 of a mile off.
